P2P is indeed in a gray area as far as file sharing goes. I've used Azureus and abandoned it for the same reasons. In addition, you have to trust that the file provided by the person uploading the item is not virused and not malware and plays properly. I'm just a tad too suspicious for that.
music.download.com is a reputable site where you can get some free music and some paid music (I'm going to try them out later today.) So is amazon.com for that matter. I have Itunes, and while I don't adore it (sorry, Mac users... I don't see much difference in that and a lot of the PC software availalable), I do use it.
Yahoo music is good, but I don't download an album's worth of music each month, so it's not worth the $60 to me.
One other site I'd like to recommend is UCLA Berkeley's courses. These are lectures by the very best of their professors -- entertaining, informative, and a pleasure to listen to if you want to listen to learn something. My absolute favorite is Mueller's "Physics for future Presidents" -- one of those courses that makes you say "OOOooh!! Listen to THIS! Did you know that there's more energy in a pound of chocolate chip cookies than there is in a pound of dynamite?"
