Depending on where you move to, you may or may not have an issue. I live in GA and I was a deputy sheriff here for 4 1/2 years. In most compact states (approx 40 are compact states) the rules are that within 30 days of CHANGE OF RESIDENCE you must obtain a valid state license and vehicle registration. Insurance can be from a number of places as long as the state allows this. (At one time South Carolina required that the insurance agent BE from South Carolina of have an office in the state.) If you are stopped by a LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) and they see that all 3 of your items (License, registration, and Ins) are from 3 different states I can almost guarantee that you will have issues. Usually the only people who don't are military. It may sound odd but follow me here:
John Doe is a good guy who has fallen on hard times.
John Doe lives in Georgia and has a Georgia license.
John Doe buys his insurance off the internet and it’s from North Carolina but he gets a GEORGIA card from them (Smart John)!
John goes to Alabama to stay with his mom and buys a car and registers it in Alabama.
John goes to Florida to look for a job and gets stopped by an LEO for speeding. John will be under suspicion the second he hands his information / documents to the officer. WHY??? Most drug smugglers have licenses from one state and vehicles registered in another. WHY??? They stay under the radar this way. Most states tie vehicle registrations to the drivers licenses for the purposes of suspending the license if the vehicle insurance lapses. This keeps dead beats form getting insurance & making one payment, getting their vehicle registered, making no more payments on their insurance and then driving around the remainder of the year uninsured but with a registered vehicle. SMART for the States themselves but bad for people like John.My advice? Spend the extra cash (if you can) and register the vehicle in the state where you have the Drivers License OR switch the Drivers License to the state where the vehicle is registered. Go with whichever is cheaper. Just PLEASE... Save yourself the hassle of not having them match.

| PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT. It has been done before, but never successfully. In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace. NEWS FLASH: I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday. I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish. I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?). I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!" Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures. If you cannot accept or agree with the terms of service for this website and discussion board, you are advised not to post on this board. In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact. And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!). |
