In Response To: Local Site Ads (Bob)

It's a good idea -- and will be top-notch if you can get some display advertising in your local paper. That way, folks who pick up the paper can become familiar with it and your offer (say $5 for one week; $20 for one month for a certain sized banner) will become well known.

Some other issue to think about -- layout, ad size, ad colors (no, I'm not kidding), and ad staff (which could be you.) Most folks haven't a clue how to lay out an ad (and there's an art to it.) You can offer 3-4 desings for text only and 3-4 for "picture included." If someone has a professionally done ad (like an Ebby Holiday realtor ad) then you could run it.

Color can be an issue for top banner ads. Color "brands" your site, and if you have at the top a HUGE ad with all the wrong colors, it adds quite a jarring note to your page.

Do consider a fee for creating the ad (and then say, "ready to go ads are only $2/week for a 200x200 ad".)

You will have to know something about optimizing graphics. Some folks will hand you an ad that will take 5 minutes to add. Others are going to try and shoe some flash animation on you (don't accept that. It requires special programs, and not all the computer users in your area will want to download and upgrade.)

I would offer the ads free for a limited time (or charge a dollar for the whole month.) You will also have to have content that keeps people coming back to the site... you can use some RSS news feeds to pick up things like health news and local news and agricultural news, but in addition a little original local content would be nice.

Along with a link to your local radio stations AND the newspaper.

Anyway, we just got in from a long trip yesterday and I'm achy and sleepy and that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Hopefully others will leap right in and add to this!

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

By posting messages and/or content on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, you give permission for Lesley Fountain/Friends In Business/Shoestring Success Publications to display, distribute and use the posting and content for publication, advertising, promotion, excerption or example.         In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
