Microlending

Being the curious sort, my ears perked when I heard an NPR segment a few weeks ago on "microlending"... where someone lends a small amount of money ($25-$200, usually) to a person or business. Often these businesses are in very poor parts of the world and the loan rates are staggering... beyond what a poor person can afford.

You, the investor-microlender get your money back from the business... but no interest. For those of you interested in this, the BEST place to get involved (they take Paypal) is Kiva:
http://www.kiva.org

But, suppose you wanted to see a bit of return for your investment. As it turns out, there is a site where you can become part of a lending group and you do receive a payment that includes interest for the money you lend. The site is "Prosper", which hooks up lenders and borrowers (and includes a banking system (Wells Fargo Bank is the place where Prosper's accounts are kept) and a bidding system.

You, as a lender, can lend $50 and up to someone. Interest return rates on your loan can be up to 28% (people with very bad credit are willing to pay this.) If that rate seems high, note that many are suffering under "payday loans"... loan sharks who charge up to 60% interest... and they're desperate to get out from under that crushing burden.

Here's a transcript of NPR's show on peer-to-peer microlending and the Prosper site itself:

A word of warning about Prosper... it take FOREVER to get set up (unlike Kiva, which accepts Paypal). Figure on 3-4 days to get your information and bank account vetted, and another 3 days for each money transfer from your account to the Prosper holding account (yes, even when you bank with Wells Fargo, as I do.)

You won't get rich as a microlender. But the loan interest rate returned to you is a lot better than the interest rate you'll get from your bank (ditto CDs) and is somewhat less risky (IF you pick the right people to lend money to) than the stock market.

Salon has a largish article about Prosper... and about some of the really heartwarming stories as well as some of the frauds on there:

Profile of a successful investor -- with LOTS of warnings as well:

It's not for everyone, but I thought a few of you might find it interesting.

The British firm, Zopa (similar idea to Prosper) should hit the US later this year:

P.S. Here is the Kiva loan I helped fund -- FIVE businesses plus business training for the new entrepreneurs! I'm excited about this!

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

Although we may, from time to time, monitor or review discussions, postings and the like on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, we are under no obligation to do so.  We are not responsible or liable for any claim arising from the content of any such discussions or postings or for any error, defamation, libel, slander, omission, falsehood, obscenity, pornography, profanity, danger, or inaccuracy contained in any information contained within such locations on the Site.

By posting messages and/or content on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, you give permission for Lesley Fountain/Friends In Business/Shoestring Success Publications to display, distribute and use the posting and content for publication, advertising, promotion, excerption or example.         In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
