Do you use System Restore?
I never do ANYTHING that could screw things up... i.e., download a file, install a program, mess with the registry, change a file extension, etc.... without setting a new restore point. I can't begin to tell you how many times this rather compulsive habit has saved my skin.
It isn't perfect -- I have one program that I downloaded as a trial, and it simply will NOT go away completely -- but it takes out unwanted junk better than any "uninstall" ever did, and it repairs any damage you do to the registries.
I hate Windows Vista with a passion, but that's one nice thing it does... it sets a restore point every day at "System Checkpoint" even if I forget to set one (unlike XP, where sometimes I didn't have a restore point less than a month old).
One less thing to worry about.
