FIB - Scams 101
Express Secret Shoppers scam mentioned on national radio

I heard some guy call in about this scam on the Dave Ramsey show on national radio on 11-7-2007. He called Dave to get Dave's take on whether or not it was a scam, even after his own bank even told him it was and that he better not deposit the check and do whatever it is express secret shoppers wants him to do because he'll find himself owing the bank thousands of dollars. Dave never heard of the scam before since that isn't his job (scams that is) but he did tell the guy to forget about it because it sounded like a scam. I tried to get through tell Dave's crew to check out this site and the threads about this company and to possibly make an announcement to the guy about it on the air but I could never get through. Dave's show's very popular and you have to start calling early if you want to get through.
The guy was sent a check from this company "express secret shoppers" for a bit over $5,000 and the check was to be deposited by him and he was to send them (express shoppers) something like $3,000 dollars of it and then keep the rest as his payment for "doing the job". The check from some unassociated company not from express secret shoppers. I think it was from a plumbing company or something. I can't remember though.
Also, I just checked their site at ExpressShoppers.net and it appears they are down. It also appears that Godaddy took the domain back from them because the whois has been changed from the whois protection info over to Godaddy's info. Check it for yourself on any whois site. This is good news. Godaddy must have received many complaints from people about their antics and decided to pull their domain from them. They might just set up shop on another domain and keep doing what they've been doing though. They may even change their name altogether, that's the sad part seeing how people will stop searching the net for ExpressShopper.net or Express Secret Shoppers. But I'm sure eventually someone will post their new name here eventually (if they do change their name).
It's also notable that they used to own expressshoppers.com at one point (recently) but they also lost that and then was snapped up by a domain speculation company (who currently owns it). It appears that this company keeps going and going.
Beware people. I think that this scam is more widespread than you think and many innocent people are getting milked. I hope that these people are noticed by the law soon and jailed for this scam soon, but don't hold your breath.

| PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT. It has been done before, but never successfully. In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace. NEWS FLASH: I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday. I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish. I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?). I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!" Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures. In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact. And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!). |
