Year's ago, someone noted that nothing happens until someone buys something. We don't live in a vacuum, and many things aren't bought until the product or service is advertised.
We also serve the economy who only sell advertising and marketing.
As for sitting around waiting to sell something, I can testify that not that much is bought passively in my industry. Selling involves work in many cases. Which is why so few starters are successful in my industry today. Too many discover that work and effort are involved and don't even try.
One of the largest distributors in the promotional advertising industry paid over $240 Million for Strawbelly.com . Once they found out the passive sales didn't justify the price they paid it was too late. Strawbelly.com became just another forgotten name in the dot.com boom turned to bust. The buying company took a multi-million dollar write-off for their expensive lesson in passive internet sales.
I believe it was Albert Einstein who noted that many people overlook opportunity, because it comes wearing blue jeans, disguised as work! (Or words to that effect.)
Many salespeople recognize that sales involves effort and are thankful that more people don't go into sales as a career. With twice as many sales people, the slice of pie for the average salesman would get smaller. The professional salesperson would still have a generous portion, as they would continue to do what it takes to maintain their market share.
