Which brings me to more good news...
One of the reasons I avoided meds for as many years as I did (besides the fact that things were going okay and, thank God, she "has only been suffering for six months," according to her meeting with the psychiatrist)...
Where was I?
Oh yes...
One of my major concerns was the fact that people with mental illness typically go off their meds when they "feel better." It almost always happens at some point, and the thought of it happening when I'm not here to keep her grounded absolutely terrified me, so I was desperately hoping it wouldn't get worse and we'd be able to keep it under control with behavior modification (based, in large part, on the fact that I survived my moderate OCD and am getting better and better at controlling it as the years go by).
Alas, hers is "extremely severe" so it wasn't to be, but back to the good news:
The psychiatrist says people with severe OCD would, for the most part, "rather cut off their own arm than go back to feeling that way," so going off meds down the road isn't a big risk.
And my beautiful girl absolutely amazes me with her level of insight. We've worked so hard on this for the past few years that she really seems to "get it." In fact, she "got it" before I finally got professional help, but the craziness of OCD was just too powerful so nothing made sense anymore.
I think she's going to do just fine.
If you'd asked me two weeks ago, I'd have said she was doomed. Things were that bad, and I was sure there was going to be a list of diagnoses a mile long, including unfixable personality disorders, you name it.
OH HAPPY DAY!!!
I've still got some recovering of my own to do, and she needs a ton of my time right now -- but I'm really hoping to get back to "interneting" sooner rather than later.
