In a world where you typically only get paid one time for doing a job, finding a source of residual income will give you leverage to increase the dollars you can earn per hour.

One form or residual comes from "consumption". Much like the grocer or cafe who benefits when the customer returns to buy more, even if the products and quantities vary. Online, this would compare to the monthly fees paid for internet service or web site hosting.

Another form of residual income is when a person needs a secondary product. The car owner who buys equipment to "upgrade" is similar to someone who buys an eBook, then wants additional information from the author.

Another residual income is when a business owner pays others to work for him, and he earns a margin on what they produce in sales or service. Online, this would compare to affiliates who earn a commission on every 'click-through' or sale made for another persons products. Both the affiliate and the author are earning money, split with each receiving a reasonal

The consumption, upgrade, and affiliate sales generally take less time than the initial sale, so the person has leveraged their time and consequently earns more per hour or year than they would have without the residual components.
