If your payment history has been good so far, and if you've kept in touch (and kept your word on anything you agree to to pay your debts) with the creditors, you don't have to file bankruptcy. The proviso's are that you can set a definite date/time in which to pay something and that you keep your word. That means, a source of income you can depend upon, not necessarily something that will magically pull a miracle out of a hat for you.

Keep your wits about you, get a budget going for yourself that is realistic and explain the circumstances. Have an offer/plan in mind before calling creditors otherwise you may find yourself agreeing to something you can't hope to do. That's not good in a creditor's eyes at all. They'll push...you just have to hold the line or get back to them to give you time to figure out a different way to accommodate the 'musts' and still keep everyone co-operating on your side of the fence.

It sounds like you're in pretty tough straits right now so here's some extra little helpers for you. DO remove a portion of any funds you have in your bank and keep them in a safe and accessible only by you place. That way, if your funds are seized by a creditor, you will have funds for your basics.

You should, however, try not to let anything go to judgement. This is where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and why I suggest you keep in touch with your creditors and keep them informed of your progress etc...Creditors get antsy when there's no word and will file if they feel there's no other hope of collecting (eventually) or that you might be ready to run out on them.

I am writing as a former bookkeeper and credit manager. I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. Hope this is helpful to you and any others in tough circumstances these days.

You will probably hear from others on here with more concrete advice regarding your supplementing income query. I figured you needed a way to ease some of the pressure and avoid additional hassles so I posted this. Good luck!

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
