Health discount plans can't begin to compare with true insurance. If you want to have insurance coverage, but at a lower cost, check into setting up a Health Savings Account. This is where you put money into a dedicated saving account, and use the money only for paying medical expenses. Then you get a major medical only insurance policy that only covers the bigger expenses, such a multiple days in the hospital/intensive care, cancer, cardiology, etc.
The money in your account remains yours for emergency use, and there are tax advantages as well. You also interest on your deposits and can take the balance out if you choose once you qualify for Medicare.
The HSA allows you to increase your health care coverage, while lowering your risk, and reducing the cost of insurance.
I'm not an insurance agent or government employee. Seek advice from professionals about the advantages and costs of setting up your HSA.
