At Home Assembly - Butterfly Magnets - AAACCKKKK!!!

In Response To: Butterfly magnets? (Kathryn)

I have no personal experience with Butterfly Garden Magnets, but I have plenty of experience with At Home Assembly jobs -- so what I'm about to tell you is based on my own personal opinion and a very educated guess.

First, read my article on At Home Assembly jobs. I wrote it eons ago, but the information is still right on target:

Assemble Crafts (or Electronics) At Home

My personal opinion is that there are several red flags in the Butterfly Garden Magnets offer:

==> Realistically, do you think you can measure, cut, and glue 24 of these magnets every hour (necessary if you want to earn almost-but-not-quite $10 an hour)? That's 2-1/2 minutes per magnet.

==> Startup cost is $24, but they only "require a minimum deposit of $7.00" -- so which is it?

==> They will refund $15 of your $24 if you aren't satisfied. At first glance that could seem fair; I mean, it costs them money to send out their valuable(?) supplies to all those lookey-loos who really had no intention of doing the work. But what if you receive the startup kit and you realize how utterly ridiculous the whole thing is? (Stranger things have happened.) They still keep $9.00 of your money -- or is it $7.00 (since that's the minimum required deposit).

==> A sample butterfly is only $5.00. Does that look like a $5.00 butterfly to you?

==> They recommend buying your supplies locally so you can make more money. Does that make sense? Not to me. A legitimate company that wholesales its products to retailers is going to have some kind of standard. Their customers will soon tire of buying these gorgeous(?) butterfly magnets made with supplies purchased by hundreds of "home assembly workers" with different tastes.

The rest is covered in my article, including the fact that...

==> they could hire LOCAL independent contractors to do this on a piece-work basis (they would have people lining up around the block!), and

==> the idea is to get paid for your labor. If you mess up, they pay you for your time and send you home. In these home assembly schemes, you pay for materials, they typically reject your work, and you lose.

If I had to guess, I would say the Butterfly Kitchen Magnet company is making their money on startup costs and that selling these wonderful creations to retailers has little if anything to do with their business plan.

My advice is to run, run, as fast as you can!

(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
