An easy way to get an approximation of how many people are promoting an ebook is to just Google it in quotation marks. For example the dog training ebook Sit Stay Fetch would be Googled as "Sit Stay Fetch" and will yield over 53,000 results, most of which are people trying to sell that ebook.
On the other hand, say you google the Clickbank ebook "The Hydroponics Garden - Growing Without Soil" you will get a little over 200 results. A lot fewer people are targeting that ebook and if there are enough hydroponics related keywords to target, and the ebook sales page is decent, you may make sales.
Now, that's not to say you cannot promote Sit, Stay, Fetch, but people searching for dog training solutions are going to either have purchased it already, or have already seen it a gazillion times, and you've going to have to dig pretty deep to target relevent keywords to promote the book. You want to present something fresh for your visitors.
