Yes, one of the benefits of being self-employed is having more control over your life and being able to set and re-arrange your priorities as your situation changes.
Although my office is in my home, I conduct a lot of my business at my client's location. And through the internet, I can carry on much of my work remotely, as I did during the evacuation for Hurricane Rita. We were without phone service, including all internet, faxes, and answering machine for an added three weeks after we returned home from the evacuation.
My business dropped dramatically during the week of the hurricane, and the 5 or 6 weeks following. But, most of the decline was due to my customers absence or hardships after the storm. I even made an overnight trip to Houston to call on clients there, as they received far less damage.
Being home-based doesn't have to mean being chained to your office. It all depends on what business you choose and how you operate.
Keep looking and I'm certain you will find something that will work for you and your situation.
For lots of business ideas, check out StartUpNation.com and their hundreds and hundreds of entries in their "2008 Top 100 Home-based Businesses". It may surprise you with some of the means some have found to replace income from a job they lost or chose to leave on their own.
