I think this is an excellent idea. Look into selling the articles to online magazines (some of them pay for content.) Also, look at women's sites. You can join and post links to your sites (be careful about promoting.) In general, being "sociable" online is a good idea.

For most of us, the only marketing we do is to editors. Publication on a popular site or in a print magazine will allow you to put your contact and blog info, and that always brings readers. Regular updates keep readers (and if you can write about the occasional political issue, that always brings more readers in for some reason.)

A number of us are also on Facebook (you might join that if you haven't and post when you update.) See if you can keep a counter on your pages to find out how often they're being read.

Keeping a regular schedule of publication is important. Although at this time I'm focusing on comics, I find that since I publish once a week, having a single panel cartoon or drawing during the week helps drive a few more readers to my site.
