Facebook -- the new place for ads?

If you're doing splashy banner ads, Facebook is looking for you. In the rush to see who can come out on top in the advertising world, Facebook users may find banner ads slapped all over their browsing experience, as the social network increases its display ad market to nearly 30%. Compare this to Yahoo's 11% -- the others such as Microsoft and Google lag far behind at 5% of the market
Facebook, which will become a publicly traded stock sometime in the near future, has taken the lead in associating people and brands through things like fan pages. Their executives claim that Facebook ads are more effective than other online advertisements because when these ads or "likes" for a product show up in someone's message stream, they are recommendations from friends. And all of this is on THE most visited site on the Internet.
Should you buy a Facebook ad for your small business? My friends who have tried this say that you'd have to pour a lot of money into it to get any significant results. But "fan" pages where you highlight your business or a product -- yes, those are good ways to be seen. A lot of times your friends will "like" what you do and then your project shows up on their pages for their friends to read. This works particularly well for promotions.
Although some people turn off "likes" and "recommendations" from their news feed, enough still keep them on so that your little ad can spread gently in the online world.
