What is OAS?
Old Age Security popularly known as the OAS program is a pension program run by the CRA. This particular government pension program aims at providing financial assistance to the senior citizens of age 65 or more. It is very important that you don’t confuse the OAS program with the CPP as it is not funded from the employee contribution rather than the general tax revenues collected by the government.
So for this program the CRA doesn’t ask for work requirements and the general employee – employer contribution. The OAS is a great source of income for the low income retirees that help them in carrying out their living expenses and live their life with dignity. The OAS specifically targets the low income senior citizens so there is a process called OAS claw back through which the OAS payments are reduced or elite for high earners.

Changes in OAS Eligibility in 2025
There are certain eligibility criteria that one needs to fulfil in order to receive the OAS payment after their retirement. Now, the CRA introduces changes on a time to time basis so that the program is up to date with current times. Below we’ll include both the current and updated eligibility virtu so that you can get a better understanding of the program:
- In order to be eligible for the benefit the applicants must have attained the age of 65 years or more.
- For the OAS benefit there is also a residency requirement. You must have at least lived in Canada for 19 years after you have attained the age of 18 years.
- If you live abroad you also must have lived for a certain period in Canada after turning the age of 18.
- If you qualify for the benefits in other countries then you’ll also be considered here.
- If you were working outside Canada then you must return to the country within the six months of completion of your employment. You’ll also need to furnish the proof of employment and return to the concerned department.
The CRA has introduced these particular changes in the eligibility of the program in order to ensure that the needy gets the benefit, even if they have worked outside the nation.
OAS Monthly Payment Increase
Like every other benefit the CRA also updates the payment for the OAS based on the Consumer Price Index. This particular step is taken to ensure that the purchasing power of the individual is maintained in lieu of the rising cost of living. This increase is in accordance with inflation so that the senior citizens don’t face any problems in carrying out their monthly living expenses. As the new CPI rates update the CRA also updates their Monthly OAS Payments. This department maintains the significance of the benefit in this growing economy.
OAS Monthly Payout 2025
The OAS Payment is an important support payment for the senior citizens of Canada. However, not everyone receives the same payment, as the CRA decides the individual payment based on the age and the income of the individual. So let’s see it:
- For senior citizens between the age of 65 to 74 the monthly OAS payment is set to $713.34. However, their annual income should not exceed the $142,609 mark.
- For the senior citizens who are of age 75 or older the monthly OAS payment will be $784.67, based on their annual income which should be less than $148,179.
Now the OAS payment changes ensure that the money provided to the retirees stays relevant even in this high inflation time and they are able to meet the monthly needs of the citizens.
Some Other Changes in Old Age Security June 2025
